I do agree with you as even in my own experience a number of organisation claim to have a "silver bullet" that can make a company PCI compliant - which is clearly not possible. Instead, what we at Networks First have done in the past, is adopt a more consultative approach and discuss which elements that the customer is having difficulties with and examine each element in isolation; in many cases a simple restructuring of the cardholder data environment can result in meeting some of the PCI DSS standards and not necessarily the costly implementation of devices that claim to be able to regulate PCI Compliance.

Having been involved with the Network compliance side of PCI DSS, I can positively state that Consultants who believe they can help you, generally give bland suggestions for changing and securing access/data, when what most companies require is a clear roadmap of how to secure their Network, and more importantly what it may cost them (usually a not insignificant amount). also requirements could use "real world" technical descriptions and not "banking world" jargon.

I would be interested to hear other professionals comments regarding this.
